Any successful marketer will tell you that two of the most important tenants of a successfulbusiness are "Buy Low Sell High" and make sure that you only inventory product that is in demand and will resell fairly quickly. In the online book business the first is easy because you can usually purchase books any day of the week. There are many sources such as library book sales, estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores and others. You can bring home a trunk load of books many times for a dollar or less each.
This benefit of the first tenant can be a problem in the building of inventory. Because books
can be purchased so cheaply there is always the danger of buying stock that does not sell. When you do this you become a book collector instead of a book seller. This is fine if collecting is your goal. However to pay the bills those books will need to be sold. Book selling is a field where you need to do your research in order to be successful. Lets consider some books that are questionable at best as salable inventory.
Current biographies about movie stars and current political figures are usually a bad prospect. Current fiction is another bad choice. These usually fall out of favor quickly and many titles now are being published in electronic form making the printed versions less popular. Literature can be very difficult unless you are knowledgeable in the field.
Remember that old does not automatically mean valuable. While there are gems in those older books many while interesting simply because of their age just do not sell. While text books can be a very good choice you need to be careful here. Many sociology and political science texts can flood the market and make them useless for resale.
Study guides and computer books lose their value quickly. While many how to books can be good choices computer books about programs that are outdated are usually worthless. Contrary to what many might believe many of the Time-Life type books will not sell. Readers digest and most
National Geographic titles along with many sports and coffee table books usually will just
clutter up your inventory. As with anything though there are exceptions to the rule. Again this is why research will make or break an online book businessMost cookbooks and baking books are usually not good choices. But if you were to specialize in this field and keep up to date on what is in demand many of these could be good choices.
Romance novels and most paper backs will be poor choices. There are others that should be avoided but only research and experience will give you the knowledge needed to succeed in this exciting field. Remember that even if you don't succeed in finding a treasure while searching, every hunt is like searching for gold and you never know when you will hit the "mother lode".

Book Promotion Myth -- The Best Place to Sell Books is a Bookstore

When authors think of their audience buying books they think of bookstores. This myth sends authors taking the long, arduous road to seeking out an agent, a publisher, hoping their book will become a best seller. It won't. Why? Because you are not famous, your publishing support amounts only to a three-month book tour, billed against your sales. Your book's shelf life at Barnes and Noble or other brick and mortar bookstores is about three months too. And, you the author must promote it full time to receive less than 50% of the profits. Another reason bookstores disappoint the author is that most people go into the store to browse. They want fiction, some non-fiction, but they aren't sure what. If your book is shelved among more popular authors, potential buyers will pass it by for the well-known name. Marketing guru, John Kremer, author of "1001 Ways to Market Your Book" says "I'm glad I don't rely on retail "brick and mortar" bookstore sales for my income, but it will be nice to add that icing on the cake into my cash flow again." Before his updated version this year, in three years, John has sold 45,000 copies of his book. He is a marketer par excellence. He uses non-traditional marketing strategies; his web site, his ezine which offers tips, products and seminars, specialty stores, foreign markets, libraries, and back of the room sales from speaking engagements. Because John is a recognized name, he gets a lot of shelf space in the bookstore--cover side out. For your lesser-known book, only your spine will show and after three months of initial placement, your book will fade away unless you put on your promotion hat to get customers to the store. In one book coaching session, a new client thought he wanted to sell to the bookstores. I asked him who was his particular audience. He said business people. What kind of business people? Do these people go to the "brick and mortar" bookstore for a business book? Or, will they be more likely to subscribe to online business ezines or visit a business Web site for specific kinds of business books? Your book coach knows that online promotion is the cheapest, easiest, and most profitable way to sell books. DID YOU KNOW? *Seventy percent of US adults haven't been in a bookstore for the last 5 years.
*Bookstores sell only 45% of all books sold.
*Bookstores return non-sold books to the author-think of the Starbucks people dripping their coffee and scone on your book.
*Bookstores will take 90 days, even a year or more to pay you for your total book sales.
*Bookstores only order two or three copies at a time because of limited shelf space.
*Bookstores buy only from a distributor or wholesaler. Why the big push to get a wholesale or distributor and get into the bookstore? These people represent so many other authors don't you wonder how much attention your book will receive? They exact healthy fees, around 55%. That leaves a small profit for the author, and remember, bookstores, distributors and wholesalers don't promote your book! After her distributor went belly up and she lost $160,000, one author said she would rather have more control over her priceless products. She distributes them all herself now through various venues that suit her personality. Authors spend a lot of time and money chasing the improbable, when the "golden egg" of self-publishing and self-promotion is right in front of them. In my opinion, I'd sell my books everywhere except the brick and mortar bookstore!

Finding Treasures Hidden Within the Pages of Used Books

Used books are fascinating treasures themselves for individuals and can normally be purchased for less than five dollars. However, there are many hidden treasures that can be found in used books due to what the previous owners have used as bookmarks.
Used books can be found in a wide variety for any reader including adventure, action, romance, western, literature, cook books, and so many more. Used book stores can be a treasure hunt for collectors and avid readers as well. Another great place for the avid reader to purchase used books is at yard and garage sales. Throughout the years readers of used books have found every thing from money to love letters to baseball cards.
Readers have opened up books and uncovered all kinds of treasures throughout the years such as a grocery list found in a novel by Louis L'amour or ticket stubs to a Aerosmith concert in an old Zane Grey novel. I know it may sound crazy, but you would be amazed at the stories used book stores owners could tell you. In fact, one summer I worked at a used book store to help out a friend of my boss. My job was to flip through the pages of the used books to make sure there were no hidden surprises inside that offend his customers.
While flipping through millions of pages of these used books throughout the summer I found an array of treasures that were hidden within the pages. Some of these treasures were comical, while others where quite disturbing, but all in all this was very interesting job to say the least. These used books had apparently been purchased from a variety of sources from all over the world and were an interesting assortment to say the least.
I had read articles about different items that were being left inside of books, which consisted of a Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card, a diamond ring, several handwritten poems, and a letter written by the author of the Narnia series. Throughout the summer I found several clippings out of a variety of newspapers and magazines for all types of recipes, some of which, I felt, were worth adding to my recipe box. I found several one dollar bills that summer and even was lucky enough to come across two ten dollar bills and three twenty dollar bills, which my boss let me keep.
I found a couple of obituary clippings from newspapers that had turned yellow through the passing years. In one book I found a post card from Ireland, a receipt where a credit card had been used, a grocery list, a picture of a little boy, and a voided check. Since the check had the phone number on it I decided to call the number and see if it was still the same number as the person on the check. When the lady answered the phone and I told her I was going through a used book and asked her if the name on the check was hers, I was really excited when she said yes. I wanted to be sure so I asked her if she could give me her address and it matched the one on the check. After several minutes of conversation, I found out the little boy was her grandson and she had given a bunch of her used books to charity. I told her that I would mail all the items I found in that book to her, and she was thrilled.
Some bookstores have created their own special display within their bookstore that display items that have been discovered in used books throughout the years that they have been in business. Some of these items include an airline boarding pass that was from West Africa to Texas, recipes, dollars, many newspaper clippings, and much more.

Kristin Hannah: Well, first, I have to say, Emily, that I am just the tiniest bit irritated with you. When I got the call to do this interview, I was thrilled, to say the least. It came at a really busy time for me--right after the holidays and we all know how crazy that is--and my work in progress was giving me fits. Then I picked up Heart of the Matter, and lost myself. No more writing, no more cooking, no getting my hair done or reading my email. Once I started the story I literally couldn't put it down. Brava, girlfriend, I say. Your characters are so real and compelling, and they always say exactly the right thing. With so much honest emotion, I just have to ask how much of your work comes from your own life?
Emily Giffin: It never fails to thrill me when someone responds to one of my novels--especially when it's another writer. Writers understand the alchemy involved in making up something from nothing. And I just finished your book, Night Road, and I found it so emotional, so moving, and so terrifying--especially since I have three young children who will someday be teenagers. In terms of how much does my work come from my own life, I would say that I'm absolutely inspired by people, places, conversations, relationships, and issues that I observe, and that the "what if" part of my novel is very much inspired by these things in my life. But the details of my plots and the specifics of my characters come from my own head. How about you, Kristin? I'll ask you the million-dollar question that every author gets asked: where do you get your ideas?
Kristin: Ah, the idea question. I don't want to sound coy, but the truth is, I don't quite know. It's the most magical part of the process for me. I'm a pretty analytical gal, and I approach writing in the same just-the-facts-ma'am way I approach most things. I need to find an issue that engages me on an intellectual level, and then I need to marry that curiosity with a kind of passion. I need to feel genuinely passionate about each story before I ever write a word, and I have to actually have something to say. It takes me at least a year to research and write a novel, and so I have to really adore each part of it--the characters, setting, story. Most of all, it has to make me feel something genuine. That's really the most important component. Usually it begins with a single "what if" question--what if you discovered your mother had a whole secret life about which you knew nothing (Winter Garden) or what if your husband were accused of a crime you believed he hadn't committed (True Colors)--and then I write and re-write until the characters seem as real to me as old friends.
Kristin: I'm amazed by how much we have in common. We're both moms, both lawyers, both lived in London for a time. You're like a younger, cooler version of me. How did you make the transition from lawyer to writer, and do you think you'll ever practice law again?
Emily: I would hardly say I'm cooler than you, Kristin! I hear you live in Hawaii part time! What is cooler than that? I made the transition from lawyer to writer because I was so miserable being a lawyer that I needed some escape from the day-to-day of it. And inventing stories was that escape. I can say, without hesitation, that I will never practice law again. Would you? What kind of law did you practice, and for how long? What did you find appealing (or discouraging) about law? Did you find that it gave you fodder for any of your novels?
Kristin: Honestly, I have met very few lawyers who don't say that what they really want to do is write. Like you, I can say with certainty that I will never practice law again. Not that anyone would want me to. But I still keep my Bar membership up...just in case this whole writing thing doesn't work out. And yes, in the past few years, I have finally begun to put some of that law school education to work for me. I find that I'm really enjoying adding legal issues to my work. Of course, I have to talk to real lawyers to make sure I'm getting it right...

You have an idea for a book. Now What? Let's explore what it takes to write a book. Keep in mind that there are many different ways to begin writing a book and there have been many books written on the subject. So if my article hits home in even a little way... research what's out there for more information and start today... following your dream!
Here are a few beginning tips to writing your book:
1. What are your strengths, creating, developing, writing, editing, or slaes and marketing. Take your best strength and begin there and figure out how to get the rest done through other vendor services.
2. Pick the type of book you'll write:
--Non-fiction: how to books, self improvement, hobbies, psychology, coaching, tips
--Fiction: mystery, who-done-it, fantasy, science fiction, romance
3. Pick a subject that is interesting to you, something that others will be interested in learning more about and make it tightly focused for best results. Maybe you have a business service you want to promote or a new profession you are learning about and want to share the knowledge you are learning.
4. Create an outline of frequently asked or interesting questions. This becomes your table of contents that you'll write into.
5. Start collecting all types of information that relates to your outlined points. One of the best ways I've used is to create a three ring binder with divider pages that have pockets or use plastic sleeves and start organizing your clippings or notes you take as thoughts come to you.
6. Now determine if you are going to be the one to do the actual writing or are you going to hire an assistant. This is the first step for creating your final manuscript. Whether you are the one who will do the writing, or someone else, start that process once you have gathered enough research to fill a chapter. Don't worry yet about writing in sequence unless this is important to you, the flow paragraphs can come at a later version.
These are just a few beginning tips to get you started. While you are in this creation mode, be sure to keep an eye out for possible titles and subtitle opportunities as well as design elements you like that other authors have taken advantage of... these are all input you can relate to your book cover designer when the time comes to design your book.

My 3rd Year Intermediate Japanese Textbook - Decent, But Not Great

An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, by The Japan Times, is a moderately good intermediate Japanese textbook overall. It covers a lot of ground, but it's not always easy to use. But there are a few tricks that make it a lot easier to master the contents of the book.
On the good side, An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese is fairly good at explaining grammatical concepts. Most of the examples of Japanese grammar are clear and easy to follow. Usually, there are plenty of examples, which is important
The side notes are also pretty good. They aren't worth poring over for hours, but you'll pick up some things that are good to know about Japanese culture.
On the bad side, the book can sometimes be a bit slim on Japanese grammar examples (though it's usually pretty thorough). THE trick with this is to open up a Word document and write down the English translation of the grammar you're practicing and cook up a few more practice sentences of your own.
Also, there are way too many vocabularies and kanji in each chapter. Many of these are incredibly obscure. Now, I realize that the authors need to include these because the kanji and vocab are part of the reading passages, but that doesn't make the sheer amount of kanji and new words any less daunting.
The biggest single downfall of the book is that there is no place where it goes into more detail on kanji--no stroke order or enlarged pictures to show you how to rewrite them. All the examples occur in print that's too small to discern how to write the more complex kanji.
The trick with this book is to make flashcards for the kanji and vocab and to study over the reading passages with a friend. If you can swing that, the reading passages can be rewarding.
An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese served me fairly well through my 3rd year of college Japanese. As far as intermediate Japanese textbooks go, I'd give it 7/10. It can be a tough nut to crack, but if you just apply a couple tricks, most of the information will stick.

For those who cannot get through the day without using Google to search out an item on the Internet, Google Speaks is an enlightening book to read. The story of Sergey Brin, a young Russian immigrant, and Larry Page, described as a typical American boy in most ways, this book is, also, the story of the founding of Google, a company designated by Time magazine in 2006 as the smartest company of the year.
Author Janet Lowe brings out some revealing facts about the young entrepreneurs, including the information that both Sergey and Larry attended Montessori elementary schools. The educational methods of Maria Montessori seemed to have shaped both Sergey and Larry, Lowe writes. The two gifted young men later met as Stanford graduate students, and what began as a college research project developed into an amazing company.
Lowe's book details the growth of Google and tells about many of the people involved in the company's phenomenal developement. It also tells how the name Google came to be. Larry and Sergey intended to name the company googol which is the mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. However, someone misspelled the word as Google which Lowe terms a blessed blunder.
Among the many unique projects described in the book, is a collaboration between Google and NASA to provide high-resolution lunar imagery and maps to the Google Moon program. The book also tells about a copyright infringement dispute with the Authors Guild and others when Google began scanning and copying millions of books in library collections.
The Timeline and Glossary sections in the back provide excellent references for the reader. Google Speaks is a wealth of information. It is a book that everyone who enjoys using the Internet should read.

It has been a few years since I was in College. I remember textbook prices were outrageous. Well things have changed since then, and they are even more outrageous now. In fact, textbook prices have continued to sky rocket over the past few years.
With College students being more strapped for cash everyone is trying to find ways to save on textbooks. Some enterprising students only buy the most essential textbooks and try to get the rest of their information online or split the cost and share the book with another student.
These methods both have their downsides. It is hard to actually get your work done without your very own copy of the text available when you have time to study. Fortunately, the schools and textbook vendors have taken notice. And there are some new cost saving programs available.
The advent of eBook readers and digital textbooks was going to be the panacea of College savings. There have been a lot of strides in the eTextbook market. There are online companies like eCampus and Cengage which offer many titles at 50% off the regular price.
With Cengage you can even purchase only the chapters you need saving money and time. These digital versions of college texts were also touted as more green, easier on the pocket book, and less stuff to carry around while traipsing across a large campus.
You can save money with these digital versions and they do have a lot of potential. But, there have also been issues with ereaders still needing some work, and different formats and standards.
The latest cost saving method is renting textbooks. And this method is actually a great solution. You still save money, but you actually physically have the book to mark up and use as you see fit. Plus the prices are very competitive in fact you will save about 55% renting instead of buying.
Renting is also convenient. You can order your texts online and have them delivered to your door. Then at the end of the semester just pack it up in the same packaging it arrived in and send it back with the preprinted label.
The traditional way of cutting down on textbook costs was to purchase a used book and then sell it back at the end of the semester. This is still a viable option, but you may be able to save more with these new methods of eTextbooks and textbook rentals.

Although every Scout dreams of finding the "big score" at a garage sale or in the remainder bin at the local used book store, for the truly serious Book Scout, following five simple rules should be enough to ensure a long, happy, and successful career dealing in books.
Specialize. During the early years of the Renaissance an educated individual could be an expert at everything from medicine to literature. Today, however, that simply is impossible. People who try to be masters of everything typically end up being masters of nothing. Specializing gives you the advantage of learning and knowing intimate facts about your chosen area that most people will not know or will miss. As they say, "knowledge is power."
Know your condition. In the collectible books world, condition is paramount. Just because a book is old or rare doesn't mean that it's worth anything. Trash is trash, no matter how old or rare; however, if you do find that rare volume with an intact, flawless dust jacket, unbent pages and a clean, tight spine, you may have just found yourself a treasure.
Know your margin. Let's face it; in order to live you have to earn a living. Book Scouting is no different. Generally, according to Ian C. Ellis, author of Book Finds, a book that you acquire should be worth three times more than what you paid for it. For example, if you know that a particular book is worth $30, in order to make a profit, you shouldn't pay nay more than $10.
Constantly be on the hunt. In order to maximize your profit potential you should have a regular stable of stores that you frequently visit. In the book business as in most businesses, the luck you have is the luck you make for yourself. Constantly looking for the smaller, more frequent deals will eventually place you in the right place in the right time to make that all important big deal that may significantly increase your bank balance.
Trading isn't just for baseball cards. To be truly successful as a book scout you need to have a trader's mindset. Never pay cash for a book when you can trade for it. And never be so focused on the big deal that you overlook the much more common B-list books. That's where your true earnings come from. While a book may not be collectible, someone somewhere will be willing to pay just for the chance to read it. The margins are smaller and the business not as glamorous, but these are the deals that will ultimately pay your daily bills.
To live the life of a Book Scout you need to love books. But while a love of books may not guarantee your success, following the five rules for successful book scouting will certainly increase your chances of earning a decent living working with something you love.

Save Money - Buy College Textbooks Online, Literally

Here's a tip for the broke college kid: buy your textbooks online. I'm not talking about the regular old way; I'm talking one chapter at a time delivered in .pdf format.
Why would you want a chapter at a time? You get your syllabus at the beginning of the semester, which tells you the required chapters for the semester. Just think about it - how often do you actually go through an entire textbook?
I thought about buying the books, scanning the chapters I needed, then returning the books, but there's no way I would have manually scanned hundreds of pages. Ebooks also came to mind, as they should be cheaper than a hard copy, so I went to looking.
Eventually I came across iChapters.com. The thing I liked best is that they offer lots of books and you can purchase individual chapters! My Math 190 textbook ran me $110 used at my local bookstore, and we were only using 8 chapters. I looked on iChapters and compared the price of the individual chapters at $7.99 each- a total of $63.92 for the 8 chapters I needed. Purchasing only the chapters I needed saved me about 41% off the price of a used book at the local bookstore.
The chapters aren't some washed out, scanned POS .pdf's, they are actually high quality OCR scans, which means you can Ctrl+F and search the documents. That's a godsend during homework and studying, much better than flipping aimlessly through pages. iChapters also offer a free download of the first chapter of a book as a preview.
However, there's one thing that I hate - the security of the .pdf. If you want to access your material, you must login through the website and install (or authenticate through) their anti-piracy software. You cannot open the .pdf's unless you have an internet connection, nor can you view the chapters and print them to a .pdf or .ps file. I wish I could view the .pdf's offline without having to install any software, but that's just what they have to do to protect their content.
If you want to save LOTS of money, then buying only the chapters you need will definitely do so. You might not find all your books on iChapters, but it's definitely worth it even if you can find just one. The more money for pizza and beer, the better :)

College Textbook Savings Strategies

A college education is a great way to help with your career success. But the costs associated with attending and graduating from college have been rising faster than the cost of living. Tuition, room and board are just the beginning of the dollars that will be spent to successfully complete your degree. Lab fees, textbooks, transportation and health care are also expense to be considered.
This article will focus on textbooks, and they can cost a bundle these days. Most colleges estimate that it will cost between $500 to $700 per semester for textbooks. That is $4,000 to $5,600 over the course of a four-year degree. And if any of these textbooks is written by one of your professors, it could easily cost over $200 for that one book alone.
So how do you save when textbook costs keep rising every year and they change the editions regularly? The answers lie in how you buy your textbooks and how well you resell your textbooks.
Most students go to the college bookstore, get their list of required books and decide if they want to buy a new or a used book, if a used edition is available. Some students take it one step further and visit some off campus bookstores that may have a lower priced new book and a larger selection of used books in varying conditions.
But if you truly want to save the most on your books you need to do some research at each of these sources and then get on-line for additional options. Timing can be a very important factor in the prices you pay as well as adding additional textbook savings when you are on the selling side of the coin.
A newer option that must be considered is renting your textbooks. So far I haven't seen a compelling argument that makes me believe that you will make out better by renting than if you buy smart and then resell, but renting is still relatively new and competition has not been a major factor. I'm sure that will change soon as more companies get involved in the program.
Many students that are taking the same course, but at different times have begun using a book sharing arrangement. This can save plenty if you have one book and your partner has another, but it usually takes some extra effort to make sure that scheduling conflicts do not occur.
With the addition of electronic book readers like the I-Pad, Kindle and others, textbook manufacturers are now beginning to offer electronic versions of textbooks at a reduced cost. The problem so far has been that most students like having the book right there in front of them as they study, and reselling a used electronic edition may be tougher than anticipated..

Water for Elephants: A Novel Specifications

Jacob Jankowski says: "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other." At the beginning of Water for Elephants, he is living out his days in a nursing home, hating every second of it. His life wasn't always like this, however, because Jacob ran away and joined the circus when he was twenty-one. It wasn't a romantic, carefree decision, to be sure. His parents were killed in an auto accident one week before he was to sit for his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell. He buried his parents, learned that they left him nothing because they had mortgaged everything to pay his tuition, returned to school, went to the exams, and didn't write a single word. He walked out without completing the test and wound up on a circus train. The circus he joins, in Depression-era America, is second-rate at best. With Ringling Brothers as the standard, Benzini Brothers is far down the scale and pale by comparison.
Water for Elephants is the story of Jacob's life with this circus. Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which he finds himself. The animals are mangy, underfed or fed rotten food, and abused. Jacob, once it becomes known that he has veterinary skills, is put in charge of the "menagerie" and all its ills. Uncle Al, the circus impresario, is a self-serving, venal creep who slaps people around because he can. August, the animal trainer, is a certified paranoid schizophrenic whose occasional flights into madness and brutality often have Jacob as their object. Jacob is the only person in the book who has a handle on a moral compass and as his reward he spends most of the novel beaten, broken, concussed, bleeding, swollen and hungover. He is the self-appointed Protector of the Downtrodden, and... he falls in love with Marlena, crazy August's wife. Not his best idea.
The most interesting aspect of the book is all the circus lore that Gruen has so carefully researched. She has all the right vocabulary: grifters, roustabouts, workers, cooch tent, rubes, First of May, what the band plays when there's trouble, Jamaican ginger paralysis, life on a circus train, set-up and take-down, being run out of town by the "revenooers" or the cops, and losing all your hooch. There is one glorious passage about Marlena and Rosie, the bull elephant, that truly evokes the magic a circus can create. It is easy to see Marlena's and Rosie's pink sequins under the Big Top and to imagine their perfect choreography as they perform unbelievable stunts. The crowd loves it--and so will the reader. The ending is absolutely ludicrous and really quite lovely. --Valerie Ryan

I have a book coming out called I Remember Nothing, and it will probably not surprise you to hear that I can’t recall how I came to write it.

I notice that most authors who write about their books on their Amazon page know exactly when inspiration struck, and they describe this Eureka moment quite eloquently. But I don’t have a clue about mine. There had to have been a blinding flash when I realized I had to write something about Age and Memory, but, as I said, I remember nothing, and my guess is that this shimmering insight was followed in short order by my forgetting I’d had the idea in the first place. And then I had the idea again. And forgot it again. Until finally, miraculously, it stuck.

When you’re young, you make jokes about how things slip your mind. You think it’s amusing that you’ve wandered into the kitchen and can’t remember why. Or that you carefully made a shopping list and left it home on the counter. Or that you managed to forget the plot of a movie you saw only last week.

And then you get older.

A couple of years ago, the actor Ryan O’Neal failed to recognize his own daughter Tatum at a funeral and accidentally made a pass at her. Everyone was very judgmental about this, but not me: only a few weeks earlier, I’d been in a mall in Las Vegas when a very pleasant-looking woman came toward me, her arms outstretched, and I thought to myself, who is this woman? How do I know her? It turned out to be my sister Amy. You might think, well, how was she to know her sister was in Las Vegas, but I’m sorry to say that not only did I know, but she was the person I was meeting in the mall.

Anyway, at some point, I thought it might be fun to write a book about what I remember, and what I’ve forgotten. I still feel bad about my neck, but I feel even worse about the fact that huge bits of my life have gone slip-sliding away, and I thought I’d better write them down while I still had a sense of humor about it all.

The Best Cupcake Recipe is From Magnolia Bakery

When I was searching for the best cupcake recipe for my daughters birthday party I thought I'd find a handful of different versions of some textbook cupcake that I could dolly up and make pretty. I was going out of my way to even look for a recipe, it would have been far easier to grab a premix at the grocery store. But given the importance of a little girls birthday party the search went on for the best cupcake recipe. Never would I have imagined the 100's of different recipes, frosting, decorations and the craziness surrounding this baby cake phenomenon.
Which rock had I been hiding under? All of a sudden we've gone from enjoying the humble slice of carrot cake with cream cheese icing to these amazing designer cupcakes with unimaginable flavors, designs, swirls and sprinkles and names like 'Red Velvet'.
So after a little more research of this delectable gem I stumbled across what I guess you could call a branded or trademark cupcake called Magnolia Bakery which is located in New York. There is a huge amount of hype over this particular cupcake so what better place to start than the Magnolia Bakery vanilla cupcake recipe. This really was my first attempt at making cupcakes and I'm delighted that this recipe is the one I set my benchmark with.
My vanilla cupcakes turned out light and fluffy, golden and tasting perfect especially accompanied with a huge swirl of butter cream frosting, oh and don't forget the sprinkles. This cupcake was delicious with the right texture, appearance and taste. The compliments and request for more at my daughters birthday is a testament to this little beauty.
There are literally hundreds of books available on baking a sumptuous cupcake, I do own a few myself. However, I declare that none have come close to the success I have when using the best cupcake recipe from Magnolia Bakery. It is truly worth the effort.

E-Textbooks Against Normal Education Textbooks

Recent changes in the educational system have included things like change in teaching techniques and methods of learning. One of the more familiar methods of learning is through textbooks, writing notes and listening to the teacher. However, other schools have taken a different approach introducing e-textbooks, e-learning and use of computers during classroom hours. Does this new method mean that convention education textbooks will be overthrown by laptops and computers?
In Vail, Arizona, the Empire High School has taken the step towards turning their classrooms digital. Each student has been given their own computer, provided by the school, to do their homework and listen to podcasts of their teacher's science lectures. A Few blocks away from Empire, Cienega High School has initiated a new system allowing students with their own laptops to register onto the 'digital section' of many of their English, Science and History lessons.
As more schools within this area begin to take the digital approach of teaching, a growing number of people begin to speculate that education textbooks are heading in the direction of scrolls. With this being the case, for teachers who are strong on the idea of keeping textbooks thriving in classrooms choose to balance the use of computers and notebooks without ignoring the way young people are 'wired' today. More to the point, most young people around the world have access to the internet and have easy access to free learning tools. Where young people twenty years ago would conduct their research at the library, young people today are using the internet to download research information for various projects and coursework.
Fortunately textbooks have not yet gone in the direction of the scroll and are still very much prevalent in classrooms. Arizona is currently one of the locations experimenting with e-textbook learning, which is a major step as the final end of year assessments and examination results will reveal how this method of learning will benefit students.
Some teachers and educational professionals have stated the disadvantages of e-textbook learning. The structure of e-textbooks can be longwinded, in that they do not have page numbers like normal education textbooks do. Instead they have location numbers, which students can type in on the keyboard and jump straight to the desired section. However, these location numbers can be long and could take time for students to look up and type in, whereas normal textbooks only require a flick of a few pages leading them directly to the section that they need.
Furthermore, some students have been confronted with a few glitches and errors when trying to locate specific sections using the computer, breaking the flow of teaching and delaying class time. Students have also claimed that it can be difficult to make notes within the margins, taking them longer to type down information and keeping up with the lesson structure. With the above problems in mind it appears that the speculations of textbooks being taken over by digital means is just that - speculations! Normal textbooks are not likely to disappear anytime soon and will continue to play an important in student learning.
Though major internet book retailers are supporting digital learning, there is a balance between using computers as a tool for teaching and textbooks for studying in classrooms. The idea is for schools to provide an option for students, to be free to use digital resources as well as normal textbook resources. Many online bookshops are offering both e-textbook and normal textbooks, which have resulted in an increase in sales.
Young people do appear to be moving away from using textbooks at home for researching, but one of the first things they do is using the internet to source very specific textbooks which hold vital information that the internet is not able to provide. Furthermore, they may also purchase e-textbooks if time is of an issue and have a virtual copy if they cannot wait for a hardcopy to arrive.
To conclude, it is unlikely that e-textbooks will completely take over normal textbooks, however it is more likely that we will see a balance between the uses of both in classrooms sooner than we expect.

Plot: As Bella nears High School Graduation, Seattle is being ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and has everyone in the small town of forks on edge. As Graduation nears, Bella's best friend, Jacob Black, confesses his undying love for her as Edward is trying to protect her. After graduation, the werewolves and the vampires unite to fight a pack of newly created vampires out for Bella's blood, but there is something more dangerous that is after Bella. While they are waiting for the battle to begin, Jacob tricks Bella into kissing him, and in that one kiss, Bella realizes that she not only loves Jacob Black, but she is in love with him. After the kiss, Jacob runs off the fight with his werewolves and Bella is left to deal with the implications this new knowledge brings. Edward isn't mad she kissed him and only wants her to be happy. Jacob gets injured in the battle and Bella realizes that she has to choose who to be with. As she visits Jacob in La Push she realizes that she can't live without Edward and tells Jacob that she is going to marry Edward and get changed into a vampire.
Impressions: The most pivotal plot development is when Bella realizes what she will really be giving up being with Edward. Meyers does a superb job portraying Bella's inner conflicts between Jacob and Edward. You really see Bella start to mature a little more and think about the consequences of her actions. Eclipse is a pivotal novel in the Twilight series. Definitely worth the time.

Book Review - The Mammoth Hunters by Jean M Auel

The third book of the best-selling Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel picks up immediately after the end of the second novel The Valley of the Horses. The heroine of the series, Ayla, and her new lover Jondalar have just encountered a band of people whose identity is based on mammoth hunting. The meeting is shocking for Ayla because until this point in her seventeen years of life, she has never seen another living human except for Jondalar. From the age of five, Ayla had been raised by a cousin species of humans, known in the novel as Clan that are presumably Neanderthal people.
Ayla's upbringing leaves her without any cultural knowledge of how to live among her own kind. Her first experiences among the humans are bewildering and frightening. The group of mammoth hunters who take in Ayla and Jondalar designate their home as the Lion Camp, and Ayla takes this as a good sign because her totem animal is the cave lion that acts as her spiritual guide in life.
The people of the Lion Camp are also captivated by Ayla because she is beautiful, skilled as a healer, and rides a horse. The author does an excellent job in the novel of imagining the beginnings of animal domestication and how people might react to seeing for the first time a horse that obeys a human. Auel's approach to the process of animal domestication is plausible, and the way her narrative demonstrates the benefits that the animals brought to humans is compelling. Ayla's horse allows her to scout prey for the hunters more quickly and the horse helps to carry more meat back to the camp.
In this third novel, Auel gets to delve into an illuminating exploration of how early people might have lived upon the ice age steppes of Europe and Central Asia. Through Ayla's eyes that know only the culture of the Clan with its strict gender roles and unquestioning obedience to a group leader, the culture of her own people presents an astounding contrast. All that she was prohibited from doing among the Clan, Ayla is free to do among the mammoth hunters. She can hunt; speak her mind, laugh, and cry. She is also introduced to art, music and communicating with written symbols. These abstract concepts were unknown to the Clan. Throughout the narrative, the ability of humans to experiment with new ideas and innovate were presented in contrast to the Clan ways that are based on memory. Among the Clan, things are done as they were always done. They are not questioned and as a result they are not improved. This is not to say that the Clan lacked extraordinary skills. The healing arts Ayla learned among the Clan are highly effective, which brings her respect among the mammoth hunters. However, her association with the Clan is also controversial because most humans consider the Clan to be animals and call them by the derogatory term flatheads. The prejudice against the Clan is a source of conflict between Ayla and many characters in the novel.
Auel presents the mammoth hunter society as having looser gender roles, which she illustrates to be a strength. Because women and men can cross over gender lines to cook, hunt, gather, butcher, and so forth, they are more productive because everyone can pitch in on certain tasks when needed. The cooperative mindset of the prehistoric people is also an important theme of the novel. Although people certainly have their own interests and talents, they exist within a society that tacitly expects everyone to work together for survival.
Because readers of The Mammoth Hunters will be coming from the perspective of an individualistic and patriarchal culture, they will find this novel especially enthralling as it presents a society that respects and values women, bases hereditary on matrilineal descent, and depends on cooperative efforts. However, the prehistoric people in the novel are not selfless communists. They seek to improve their status and collect more valuable goods. They trade in possessions and skills and frequently gamble.
Amid the finely detailed portrayal of prehistoric human society, the gripping emotional drama of Ayla commands the narrative as always. A wrenching love triangle emerges among Ayla and Jondalar and her new suitor Ranec. As this romantic storm brews, most readers will likely wish for Ayla to stick by Jondalar, but because Ayla is such a endearing and powerful character, you, like me, will probably decide that you will follow Ayla wherever she travels. Being mad at her is impossible. She is a strikingly vivid character, both larger than life and totally familiar. Ayla represents a literary triumph for Auel, who I believe has delivered yet another brilliant novel. I praise Auel's writing so highly because her characters became real for me. I think about them when I am not reading the books. I worry about them. I wish I could talk to them. In The Mammoth Hunters, Auel has created that most blissful of reading experiences: one that is emotionally tangible.
For readers who like adventure, drama, romance, powerful spirituality, and contemplating the mysterious origins of humanity, The Mammoth Hunters is highly recommended. I rate it five tusks of mammoth ivory.

How to Make a Scrap Book

Three years ago, I decided to do something with all the "stuff" I had saved from my children's school days. My daughter was 26 and my son was 30. They were married and had families of their own. Someone invited me to a Creative Memory party, and I was hooked. I don't think they knew I had saved their treasures. Some days when I missed having them close by; I would go through the boxes. I had made a lot of mistakes in my life but saving all of their collectables was one of the best things I ever did.
If I can do this, anyone can. I am not particularly creative or artistic. This is how I completed the process. It's time consuming but actually very easy.
The first decision is deciding what kind of book you want to make and who will be featured in the book. Some scrapbooks are basically like photo albums with comments. Others are filled with treasured items. Some people work on their books a few pages at the time, delaying final completion until a certain event like graduation. Others like me put one together in a few months.
Once you have decided on the type of book, you should know how many pictures and how much memorabilia you want to include in the book. Most of the books are large so you want to make sure you have enough to fill it. The amount of items you have will determine the size of book you decide to make. They range from very small to very large.
It is now time to go shopping for the scrapbook and other supplies needed to complete the job. Supplies can be purchased from specialty stores, craft stores, discount stores or independent dealers such as Creative Memories. You do want something that will last for a long time.
After you have purchased the supplies, sort out the pictures and collectables. You will need a lot of room to do this. Once you know exactly what you have it is easier to decide how it will be arranged. I did mine from birth to current time. I have seen scrapbooks that focused on one life event. Anything you have pictures for could be turned into a book.
When you have decided on the order, it is time to start preparing the pages. There are pre-made borders and artwork you can use or some people draw their own. Usually the pages have a theme, such as first birthday. To fit more pictures on the page you will have to do some cutting to eliminate unimportant backgrounds. This is known as cropping.
After you have the items and pictures cut out, you then glue or tape them to the page. You want to secure them so they will not move. You may want to add more borders, artwork, or comments. I added some of my memories from the time periods involved.
You can utilize both sides of the page, as I did, to increase the amount of space or use the front side only. When you are finished with the page cover it with a plastic, protective covering. These are hard to get off once they are on, so make sure you are finished with that page before applying.
Special effects like locks of hair or the first tooth can fit into pockets that you attach to a page. You can also purchase sheets with pouches made to hold items like report cards and valentines. I even included the outfits my children came home from the hospital in.
After you have completed all the pages and covered them with the protective covering, it is time to put them inside a binder. The binders come in different sizes and they are adjustable. It's a little tricky getting the binder to fit together but with a little effort it can be done.
Most scrapbooks have a place in the front cover to write who the book is to and the date it was completed. It's important to note this. The books can be heavy once completed. I recommend purchasing a tote bag just for the scrapbook. This protects the book and makes it easier to transport.
The last step is to give the book to the person it was intended for. I promise it will be one of the greatest gifts they ever receive. Who would not want to receive a memory book devoted totally to them?
The biggest mistake I made when making the first two scrapbooks was not allowing enough time to complete the project. I had planned to give them as Christmas gifts but did not purchase my supplies until the fall. It takes hours to go through stuff, cut the pictures, arrange them on the page, glue them, cover them, etc. I stayed up all night several times so that I could complete the project on time.
Making the scrapbooks was a very positive experience for me. It allowed me to go back and relive a lot of memories I had forgotten. Sometimes I cried but other times I laughed. I picked up the phone to call old friends. It made me more aware of how fast life goes by and how easy it is to lose touch with people in our lives.
My children were overjoyed with their gifts. For them to be able to go back and read report cards and old love letters was priceless. In some ways it helped them pull their childhood together - some of the missing pieces finally made sense. They talk about the day they will share these with their children. Both of them agreed the scrapbooks were the best gift they had ever received. For me, it was the best gift I ever gave.

Achieving Your Goals Is Just A Step Away

The old Chinese proverb has been told and re-told so often that it has become a cliché. But that should not cause us to lose sight of the fact that a long journey really does begin with a single step. And another, and another.
I am reading a very interesting new book called, The Seven Minute Difference: Small Steps To Big Changes, by Allyson Lewis. So far, even though she is covering ground already covered by others, her approach has been very interesting and helpful.
Lewis calls these small steps "micro-actions," and I believe she is on target.
Way back when I was a college student, I wrote a paper on Management By Objectives, which at that time was the trendy business "flavor of the month." But now, almost thirty years later (am I really that old?) I clearly remember that many studies had found that individuals and organizations that have clearly written "sub goals" were much more successful than those who merely have written goals.
In other words, as important as it is to write down your goals, it is also necessary to have smaller goals that lead, step-by-step, toward the bigger goal.

There were several reasons why sub goals were so important. First, all of us have a tendency to lose focus if the finish line to our goal is too far away. But if we have a series of sub goals that can be achieved within a short time period, we tend to stay on track.

Second, sub goals are plans. It is not enough to set a lofty goal of what you want to achieve, you must also have a plan that shows you how to achieve it.

Third, sub goals are motivating. I tend to get discouraged long before I reach a long-term goal. Or I lose interest or get distracted. But sub goals give us our daily dose of success that can keep us moving forward with the desire to reach the end.

Fourth, sub goals are progress reports. Nothing lends itself to aimless wandering more than not having signposts to mark the way. A series of sub goals are those signposts that allow us to figuratively look on the map and say, "we are here, and we have only this far to go."

Nothing great is ever accomplished in a single step. Real success only comes by putting one foot in front of the other until the journey ends. Whether you call them micro actions or sub goals, the steps along the way are just as important as knowing where you want to eventually wind up.
So set goals, but also plan your journey with sub goals or micro actions. That insures that you will actually achieve what you set out to do.

When one picks up Kent Haruf's novel, Plainsong, the title may be misleading. While the meaning of plainsong is "any simple and unadorned melody or air", the novel is far from plain. In fact, it is intriguing and demonstrates a depth of complexity in the characters and the storyline.
The book offers us a glimpse of the ordinary and the extraordinary, the mundane coupled with the heroic. We are presented with real characters living real lives in ordinary ways. Yet this book illustrates the extraordinary; the effect and impact that each of us can have on another person.
While the book may appear fragmented in the beginning, you soon come to realize that there is interdependency amongst the storylines. Though separate narratives, the lives of the characters later become weaved together in various ways. There is the mother who emotionally and then physically abandons her husband and two young sons, the pregnant teenager deserted by her mother and boyfriend and the two elderly brothers contentedly living an existence of solitude and unattachment.
The theme of desertion is a recurrent one in the novel. Yet what stands out is the way in which the lives of the characters in the novel are intertwined, entangled, and intricately interwoven together. At its very core, it is not desertion but interconnectedness as a theme that weaves the parallel stories together.
This is also an illustrative depiction of small-town America. While it identifies the small-mindedness of some, it also demonstrates the unifying nature of community and of coming together for the greater good of others. It also shows the depth of inter-human relations. In the face of adversity, when family fails you or abandons you, it is the relations we turn to who can sustain us even more.
No where is this more evident than in the example of the two old brothers, who are more connected to mother earth than to others in their community. While they are naïve to the ways of the world, they open up their home and heart to a young pregnant teenager. In the end, the reader is left questioning who has benefited most from this unique arrangement. It serves to illustrate that what we think we need is not always in our best interest.
As a caution, there is some sexual content in the novel. While not gratuitous in nature, it helps the characters on their journey of discovery and maturation. Our sexuality is one component that comprises our nature.
No man is an island and no where is this truer than in Holt County.

As a huge thriller buff, I cannot believe I just discovered this author. The novel starts in the voice of the beyond creepy killer and hooks you immediately. You will never sleep with your window open again.

We are introduced to Jane Rizzoli, smart, tough, and her own worst enemy. In fact, I did not love her in this debut but grew to adore her character in later books. Together, she and the very lovable Detective Moore hunt one of the scariest and disturbing criminals you have encountered in literature. This book has all that we crave from a "killer" build-up to a smashing climax. To add icing to the cake, the author is an actual doctor. That means the horrors are realistic and calculated.

I broke my arm and I've been glued to my kindle. Fellow readers, I am on the 7th book of the series now (in just a few weeks) and I promise it does not disappoint! I would highly suggest reading them in order for maximum experience, but if you have already started with another, no big deal.

The author, co-founder of zappos, humble despite all of his achievements, paints such a detailed picture of his life you can almost see the places and events.

In these days of tightening margins, in an effort to reduce costs, we are all seeing companies across the board cutting costs on all the wrong areas (try getting a hold of Sprint, Citizen's Bank, US Airways...) and if you do get a hold of anyone, the experience is so horrible you want to take a shower afterwards.

He realized that consistently great experience, from start to finish (and then some), will keep customers for life, and goes into great depth to describe how they are getting there and constantly evolving.

Not crazy about the chapter where the employees write paragraphs, for no other reason other that different writing styles change the dynamics of the flow.

For me, it's really been driven by daily examples of bad customer service in my everyday personal life.

My parents tell me that as a kid I was always trying to come up with different business ideas. The idea of starting a worm farm is my earliest memory of a business idea.

No, that was just the path that I happened to take. Part of the purpose of the book is to help other entrepreneurs and business owners shortcut the process and encourage them to go straight to combining profits, passion, and purpose.
7. You seem to have taken risks with business ideas a lot while growing up. How do you recognize a risk that you shouldn't take?
I think it just comes down to really breaking down what the worst case scenario actually is. For most of us, we're lucky to live in a time and in a society where we aren't actually ever in danger of dying from starvation or lack of shelter. Most of us have friends whose couches we can crash on in the worst case scenario, so any "risk" we take in starting a company isn't actually that big a risk.

Rising textbook prices have been and will continue to be a large scale problem for college students. In the past thirty years the price of books has nearly tripled. Expensive book prices are taking a toll on student's wallets across the nation. Luckily, there is short term solution and a more stable long term solution to this problem.
Last year the average tuition cost of a public college was $6,585 per semester. With college tuition costing almost seven thousand dollars a semester on average, how can college students afford to pay another $400 on books per semester? The answer is that they can't. Even with loans and scholarships, rising book prices are hard to predict. Some college students that have extremely low funds and can't afford paying for required textbooks, while the others continue to purchase books on an extremely tight budget.
The main problem is that many college students are refusing to buy or can't afford their textbooks. If students stop purchasing required books, not only will the students suffer but so will the professors. How would a professor respond if only half of the students in his or her class had the book because of its expensive price? The class couldn't be taught and the university or college would be notified immediately of the crisis.
So what can be done to save money on college textbooks in the short term? The best way to save money is without purchasing is to rent the book. Renting books can be done in the local college library, town library or even some websites. But unfortunately the library isn't convenient for everyone's schedule. Borrowing or trading books would be the next best option; search for the textbook in the most obviously places. Ask friends and family if they have taken that course and happen to have the same book. If no friends or family have the book, start an online group or a local college group to trade books each semester.
If borrowing or trading books isn't an option try to buy them at the cheapest possible cost. Purchasing books online is the most efficient way to save money when starting a new semester. Even international books are recommended, the content of the book is the same while they are sold at almost 90% off of the U.S. retail price. Many local off-campus bookstores also sell textbooks at lower prices than the college's bookstore.
The most efficient long term plan to reduce the cost of textbooks is for students to take action. Many professors will take into account the price of the book they require if a student notifies the professor ahead of time. Further actions can be taken by looking into local legislation. Call local representative's today and tell them something must be done. For example: Connecticut recently passed a law to disclose prices and history revisions of textbooks to faculty.
Textbook prices are a very serious problem for college students today. College students are struggling to pay the extra amount needed per semester, and there grades are suffering from it. Short and long term solutions can both be used to combat in the inflation or textbook prices.

The Man Who Would Be King Best Review

I love a great story and this is one of my favorites. It conveys the circumstances of an underappreciated newspaper man in the British Colonial era at a minor outpost in what is probably a reasonably accurate way (politically correct by current standards or not).

The characters the writer encounters were likely somewhat common after finishing military duty in a far-off land and being at somewhat loose ends once mustered out. Going a bit "native" was probably not uncommon for those stationed throughout the reaches of the British Empire at its height (and decline). Ideas by those staying behind which appear hare-brained were possibly fairly familiar given the tenuous situation some of the ex-pats may have found themselves in. Heck, it might have even worked if they'd stuck to the original plan! It gives you a lot to think about as far as power vs. ego is concerned.

Read the story first if you haven't already seen the movie. You'll appreciate the writing's compactness and choice of style and flow that way. However, my feeling is that although this is an excellent read and definitely a classic, many readers may find watching the movie (which is absolutely in my top ten favorites of all time) helpful in understanding some of the more subtle aspects of the story. For example, the fairly obscure references to the Masons' rituals (perhaps by necessity at the time of writing) - which are in effect the central underlying theme in regard to the various characters' undertakings - are made much clearer in the film.

Classic short story with a politics/greed/imperialism theme. I just read it based on another review that said to read it if you had seen the movie. I happen to like light, entertaining reads and thoroughly dislike politics. So this short story of two greedy, stupid Englishmen who think that they can just show up somewhere with some guns and become their own self-proclaimed kings was a frustrating waste of time for me. And remembering the ending ahead of time didn't help. (Don't give up on Kipling based on this book - I just LOVE his Captains Courageous, an upbuilding coming-of-age story about a rich kid who was washed overboard and picked up by a fishing schooner and made to work.) This free Kindle edition (check to make sure the "bought here at Amazon" button is lit) was very readable, no glaring editing errors and only the usual margin issues.

A Kipling Surprise - Motley Wisdom - Southern California USA
This was my first prose by Kipling, and it was a pleasant surprise. His descriptions of the people and the country were excellent. The developing story and surprising conclusion made for a page turner. The Kindle version is satisfactory.

A bit tough going for few couple of pages. Then I realized this is meant to be read in a "flowing" manner. I was amazed and how much was "packed" into a short story contaning human desires and how they often get the best of us when we give way to our egos. This is shown on a much smaller scale in small villages, but could easily be related to existing governments and their leaders and how and why they got there - and perhaps maybe they fail? All this, but still kept very intimate and personal to the characters in a humerous and entertaining way. And, hey, IT'S FREE!!!

Used Car Pricing: The Insanity of Used Car Prices

Used car prices are elusive, despite numerous attempts to harness them. We've all heard of Retail, Private Party and Trade-in values. But do these "help" in determining a vehicle's real value?
When we turn to the web for prices, it gets even more elusive. One web site places a retail value on a car at $18,000. Another puts it at $21,000. What should we believe?
If sellers are looking to get the highest price for the car they're selling, and the buyer wants to get the best deal possible, is there such thing as a fair used car price for both parties?
The answer is yes, but both parties have to be on the same page.
We'll call this "page" Fair Market Value.
That being said, how do we interpret the market to determine fair market value? Since most sellers and buyers are going to try to interpret the market to his or her advantage, let's even the playing field.
One of the most profound remarks I've heard to establish a better playing field for used car pricing comes from industry expert and owner of Medway Imports, Barry Roth. He states:
"To find market value, you need to take all the pricing data you find for a particular vehicle and throw out the high and low prices. What's left in the middle is where you'll find a fair market value."
While this doesn't address the used car pricing problem entirely, it does remove the unrealistic numbers that many clutch to like the drowning to a life preserver. It moves folks to more reasonable prices according to the market.
A lot of time is spent on popular web sites (for better or worse) to "help" determine used car pricing. But one should also follow and watch the market to see what cars are being advertised and sold for--if they're being sold at all.

Used car prices are also determined via auction pricing, and industry used car guides such as Black Book and the NADA Official Used Car Guide.
Importantly, even these books don't settle the used car pricing debate. Here's a publisher's note on the inside cover of the latest NADA guide.
It states:
The vehicle values in the N.A.D.A OFFICIAL USED CAR GUIDE,® are developed by N.A.D.A's editors based on many sources of information. These include reports of actual transactions throughout each area for which the guide is published.
The values in this guide assume a vehicle is clean. Appropriate deductions should be made for reconditioning costs incurred to put the vehicle in a salable condition. An exceptionally clean vehicle or one that bears a guarantee, warranty, or manufacturer certification should bring a premium price.
Please read your guide carefully when determining the value of optional equipment. N.A.D.A.'s editors believe that most optional equipment has little or no value on older cars. This is especially true of options that cost relatively little when new and which deteriorate with age or use. Only the more popular vehicle options are listed in the guide. Unless otherwise stated, all vehicles are assumed to be equipped with automatic transmission, air conditioning, compact disc player (and/or AM/FM stereo cassette,) power steering, rear window defroster, and tilt steering wheel. For other standard options, please review each vehicle's listing.
As you can see, even the most respected used car pricing guide "assumes" quite a bit, leaning heavily on the "opinions" of its editors to determine "appropriate deductions" and thus the ultimate value of a particular car.
So where does this leave buyers and sellers? After both parties throw out the high and low prices, it leaves them in the middle of the market. This is where they'll each get a fair shake (assuming vehicles are "clean"). Finding a good or "clean" used vehicle is another story.

Kaplan GRE Exam Vocabulary in a Box Best Review

Bought these cards to study for the GRE general test. I haven't taken the test yet, so I can't comment on how many of these words showed up on the test. But as for the cards themselves, they seem to be pretty good. I knew 30-35% of the words before-hand, but that still left hundreds of words to learn. There is a good variety of words in the cards, but the definitions were definitely lacking. They seemed to all be 3-4 word definitions made up by the author, rather than dictionary definitions. Sometimes I agreed with them, sometimes they seemed really wacky. And the synonyms were pretty vague as well, sometimes barely relating.

The card stock was somewhat light. These aren't thick index card stock, but they aren't super thin either. Good enough, but sometimes the cards get stuck together and you don't even notice.

Overall they are good, with a good variety of words. Hopefully they help me out on the test

Welcome to the part of the English language that you will never use!

The flash cards helped in preparation for the GRE. I do not agree with the GRE being as vocabulary-intensive as it is -- I would prefer that it would focus on cogent communication skills as opposed to bombastic vocabulary that only GRE test writers use in everyday communication. Anyway, I digress.

These helped in conjunction with other study skills. I also acquired the Kaplan test prep book and the "Cracking the GRE" test prep book.

They also have a high resale value! I was able to post them at auction after the test and almost recovered the full value!

These cards are perfect. About 80% of the words I saw on the GRE were in this pack. I memorized every word in this box, and as a result scored in the 95th percentile. I see that other reviewers have commented that the definitions are insufficient, but I disagree. The definition and synonyms that these cards give you are what you need to select the correct answer on the GRE. You don't need a thorough understanding of the word- in fact, I think that might make it more difficult. I'm a very satisfied customer. I highly recommend this product.

Shadow's Pride is the story of a horse, Areion, and his interaction with humans, namely his owner, the co-author, Roland Stanzione. The unique aspect of this book is that it is half written by Areion. Yes, if Mr. Ed could talk to Wilbur, whenever he had something to say that is, then it makes sense Areion could write beautifully. The book interlaces his narratives throughout by alternating chapters, in a first person, one by Roland and one by Areion, as seen through the eyes of a horse. This aspect of the book took me by surprise, however allowing for the utmost of creative license I indulged in accepting this premise. After awhile, I was learning the message of the book, one of revealing the dark side of the equestrian business, and the strength, courage and love between a horse and owner.
The acumen of knowledge amassed by Roland Stanzione is extraordinary, and his writing, along with Gabriella Gafni, is laced with footnotes to help explain the history of man's relationship with horses throughout the ages. I found the foundation of the symbiotic relationship between man and horse to be most artfully articulated and clearly being spoken from a lover of animals of all types. It is the power and grace of such a large beast that makes horses different. One that allows the will of the rider to overshadow the will of the animal, as it gives trust, love and respect often to people that don't return the emotions. Unless a horse is fast or breed for service, the amount of neglect and malice present in some aspects of the equestrian industry would be clearly illegal, if the animal was human rather than a horse.
In the short time in which Areion's life overlapped, a bond developed that is quite rare. It may not be the only bond of such between a human and a horse, but Shadow's Pride talks about the feelings through the eyes of the Areion and Roland in a romantic way. Shadow's Pride, based on the true story of Areion, as written by Roland Stanzione and Gabriella Gafini, is a metaphor of love, respect and a commemorative work bringing meaning and hope to all those touched by the equine spirit.
This magnificent memoir is a touching story about Roland Stanzione's love of Areion. He transcends his affection as being a long time activist for animal rights. He learns the lesson of unconditional and devoted love from an abused horse that he rescued. He provides amazing insight into people and horses alike. Shadow's Pride reminds me of a "Marley & Me" story but about a horse. Some parts will make you laugh, others will make you cry and feel bad for what they had to go through during their lives. This is a must read for anyone who knows the riches of the love of animals, and understands complete and unconditional love.

This book is my favorite book by far. I was able to relate to Jeannette's story countless times and the emotion it drew out of me was immeasurable. There were a few sentences about her father near the end that gripped me and had me literally bawling (which doesn't normally happen to me). This is the story of a family's undying love for each other, despite all their struggles and "different" way of life. No matter how awful things were or how awful they may have been to each other, they were still a family and had hopes for better things. Harsh reality is put in your face constantly throughout this book, so if you can't handle that, don't read it! I just finished Half Broke Horses, Jeannette's second book, and I have no choice but to reread The Glass Castle now to watch this beautiful story unfold once again.

Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover. --Brangien Davis
